Profile Katie Turnbull

Katie Turnbull

Kate

My name is Katie Turnbull and I am one of the newest members of the Lebeado team. I am currently studying for my BA Hons in Textile and Surface Design at Cleveland College of Art and Design and during this time my fashion and interior textile work has been selected and exhibited in Paris and “The World of Botanicals” exhibition at The Bowes Museum. I have also undertaken design work in the London Fashion studio of Baxter Fawcett which was a truly priceless experience.

I love to travel and explore new cities and cultures, where I draw countless artistic inspiration. In my very limited spare time I am also an active member of “Centre Stage North East” Theatre Company and “City Dance” Championship Team.

Within my fifteen year theatrical career I have had the opportunity to perform at venues such as the Durham Gala, South Shields Custom House, Sunderland Empire theatre and The Royal Albert Hall, London.

Whilst studying I have also had a vast array of jobs from silver service waiting to an insurance customer manager! A far cry from my true creative background ….until Lebeado.

When I first visited Lebeado I wanted to take one of the jewellery making classes, but I instantly fell in love with the place! The moment you walk through the door you can truly experience each unique culture within the store and marvel at the 5,000 beads on offer.

I believe that I have found my true artistic calling and find a great satisfaction in custom making jewellery for every occasion as well as listening to the stories that some of our friendly customers bring back with them. In my short time working for the Lebeado team I have already had so many remarkable experiences and I am looking forward to designing and exhibiting my one-off pieces in one of the many up coming major national fashion shows!

Whether you are going out on the town or meeting the in-laws we can customise jewellery for any occasion. So drop in for a visit or arrange for a one to one consultation and we will see you soon!

Customer Profile

Meet lebeado customer Jodie Fenwick

Jodie Fenwick

Kate

My name is Jodie and I have become a bit of a regular at Lebeado! I am originally from Durham, but moved to Gateshead about 2 years ago. I live in a place called ‘Windy Nook’ with my boyfriend Paul.

I studied English at Northumbria University, graduated in 2004, and now work at Durham University Library, where I have been for 3 years. My role as a library assistant involves cataloguing books and a lot of interaction with staff and students, which is great.

My favourite hobby has to be Tap dancing. I also do Jazz and Street dance, and a bit of yoga. I love theatre and most recently went to see Wicked in the West End. This summer I am taking part in the Race for Life in Durham, to raise money for Cancer Research UK. One of my most inspirational experiences was a cycle ride from Prague to Warsaw that I completed in 2006, raising money for Marie Curie.

I am so happy that Lebeado has come to Durham. I love jewellery and all things sparkly; I’m a bit of a magpie. When I first walked into Lebeado I was in awe. There are so many beautiful and amazing beads and findings. I’ve always been creative and wanted to try my hand at jewellery making. Lebeado has inspired me, not to mention enabled me to create unique gifts for my friends and family. The staff are lovely and are always on hand to help.

Thanks Lebeado x

Marcelle Lawson Smith

Marcelle Lawson Smith

Kate

“Producing charming, unusual and highly creative jewellery, Marcelle Lawson-Smith is certainly one to watch” And we certainly agree with this comment by WSGN.

Brazilian Marcelle, who is based in London and runs a design agency with her English husband, only launched her first jewellery collection 3 years ago, admitting that her career as a jewellery designer started by accident.

Marcelle Lawson With 4 collections under her belt, the 35 year old is a designer with an unorthodox style, describing herself as “an intuitive storyteller” who enjoys working with symbolic and literal imagery with a surreal twist. Marcelle mixes the traditional with cutting edge production techniques such as those used in her “Lionheart” and “Beyond Desire” collections. The latter inspired by a visit to China and featuring Budha imagery and totem animals printed onto stainless steel cuffs and oversized disc earrings. Lebeado is delighted to be one of the first independent retailers in the UK to stock her exciting collections and to quote Marcelle, “I want to see my pieces worn by the most elegant ladies as well as teenagers who know there’s more to life than a new pair of trainers”. Come and see for yourself.

Trends

The key rules for wearing a multitude of bangles according to Harpers Bazaar are:

  • Layer up bangles in different colours and materials to create a unique look

  • An oversize cuff worn on the upper arm perfectly compliments one of the seasons grecian style dresses

  • Don’t go overboard with other accessories – these pieces make enough impact on their own

  • Care tips for taking care of your costume jewellery

  • Be careful not to drop resin jewellery as it may crack, chip or break

  • Do not spray perfume directly onto your jewellery as it may damage and dull surfaces

  • Some costume jewellery is very delicate and should be stored carefully in tissue paper and kept away from other pieces of jewellery which may scratch and damage it.

  • To avoid tangling certain necklaces should be hung up.

  • Beading classes

Jane Gannaway describes how she started to make her vibrant necklaces: “I love bright colours and started making my own necklaces for the fun of working with such fabulous beads and the fun of wearing them! Its great to have my necklaces on display in Lebeado as I have been a regular visitor to Durham while my son was a student at the University and now my daughter lives there as well”
